Ask most people what a compressor’s output rating means and they’ll assume it’s constant. In practice demand spikes and dips throughout the day, and without somewhere to buffer that, the compressor ends up cycling on and off far more than it needs to — which wears it out faster.
That’s what a receiver tank does: it stores a reserve of compressed air so short bursts of high demand get met from the tank rather than forcing the compressor to react instantly every time.
