A downdraft table pulls contaminated air DOWN through a perforated worktop and into a filter below, rather than trying to capture it from above or the side. For bench work like grinding, sanding or light welding, that downward pull tends to be far more effective than an overhead hood, because the operator isn’t standing in the airflow path.
Table size should match the largest workpiece you’re realistically handling, with some margin — a table that’s too small just pushes contaminated air past its edges instead of through it.
